CBSE asked to release class 12th, 10th national merit list to avoid confusion

 

Chandigarh: Scores of class 12th and 10th topper students in Chandigarh tricity and thousands others in the country are reeling under despair as their names did not get any mention in the media reports. Though CBSE did not make a merit list for the 12th and 10th boards this year, a list was 'declared' by the newspapers on the basis of a compilation done by the reporters on the basis of results made available to them by different schools.

The parents of such left out students have demanded the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to release a "Merit List of Class XII and X results" to remove the confusion amongst the media and public in general. It is alleged that the media collected data from various schools barring a few who followed the directions of CBSE, of 'no merit list'. As a result of this the state toppers in tricity (Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali) were either missed or wrongly reported.

Father of a student of Carmel Convent School said on the condition of anonymity, "I quote the example of my child who with 98.6% could not get the applause for being first in the tricity in the medical stream, as the newspapers declared someone else with 98% as the tricity topper in that stream. This mistake could also have come about because Carmel Convent did not give the media the result due to 'No Merit List' directions of CBSE. Likewise many toppers missed the chance of being mentioned in the topper list despite scoring 99% in commerce stream. One such student of Carmel Convent got 99% marks."

Another case in point is related to Hiteshwar Sharma who has been declared as the tricity topper and also the national topper of Humanities with 99.8%. But it is not so, as another girl from Uttar Pradesh has scored 100%. "So much chaos has happened that the effect of not getting their due is now playing on the psyche of these brilliant kids. The PM has time and again talked to the students and stressed on the point that no undue pressure must be taken. But is this not a form of pressure meted out on these young minds," asked a parent.

The same has happened with the 10th class results. The newspapers declared that two students were the tricity toppers with 99.8%. However there were 12 more students with  the same percentage, but they were not given space in the newspapers. The reason- lack of a merit list from CBSE.

It is being pointed out that it would have been better if CBSE had issued a list of all the students from 1st to last on their portal, either country or zone wise, so that the press would have got a clear picture and the students would have got their due.

Another parent said, "In the years to come, whenever anyone will search for toppers in Tricity our kids, who have lost the battle of being mentioned in newspapers despite their percentage, will be nowhere to be seen and others who are not the actual toppers will always show during searches conducted on Google. What an irony and why should this not be corrected?"

In such a scenario, the CBSE has been requested to issue a merit list, which can then be uploaded by publications online so that the real picture emerges and the wrong done to the actual toppers is corrected.
